Dining room

1.The dining table needs to be illuminated without dazzling the diners. To this end, wall mounted lights are not very practical. They merely provide subdued background lighting. The best type of fitting for the dining room is a central pendant light. This should be strung at a comfortable level so that the lighting is not too stark and the sitters don't find themselves staring at a lampshade or a bare bulb.

2.In rise and fall fittings, there are many styles available, from the traditional "lantern" types on exposed pulleys to modern versions with the working parts sealed from the view. Adjustable pendants like these can be pulled down low over the table and the light level controlled by a dimmer switch for more intimate and romantic meals, or raised and brightened for regular dining.

3. For the more popular living-cum-dining rooms in urban households, it's important to plan the lighting so that the living and eating sections are separately lit and controlled respectively.
